Keep Moving Forward.

QL+ Teams have been working hard all school year and then COVID-19 changed everything. The universities and labs closed, and many of the students went back to their respective homes.  This new normal has not stopped our teams from their work. They are adapting and doing what they can to complete their project.

QL+ challenged a team of student engineers at  Cal Poly to design and build a Prosthetic Foot Shell.  A Marine veteran whose leg was amputated needs a prosthetic foot shell or an insert for a foot shell that is durable. He is a very active person and uses his foot shell often. The foot shells available on the market only last him for two or three months.  He is hoping the students can develop a reinforced foot shell that is more durable and long-lasting.

The students 3D printed a scaled foot shell, then built a silicone mold of it.   They plan to pour urethane on the silicone mold to get their foot shell.  If they get the process tuned on their scaled model, they will proceed with the full-size mold.  They are also working on tinting the rubber to get a natural skin tone.

Due to COVID-19, the team will be outsourcing 3D printing but they are still building the molds in multiple materials.  The student will have a prototype but they will need to use machines in the lab to conduct their testing.

Americans are experiencing extremely uncertain and difficult times. During this period, the Quality of Life Plus (QL+) board and staff want to share with you the steps we are taking to meet our responsibilities to our donors and our Challengers -- the wounded and disabled veterans and first responders with whom we are working at our partner universities around the nation.

It is important that QL+ continues and, wherever possible, completes its work.
