Ariel Tolentino is a Fourth Year at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo.  She is majoring in Mechanical Engineering and graduating in June 2020.  Ariel and her teammates are working on the Service Dog Ramp Challenge.  They are designing and manufacturing a Service Dog Ramp for Peter Way, an army veteran who had his right leg amputated above the knee.  The goal of the ramp is to reduce the wear and tear on Peter’s Service Dog, Rory when jumping into and out of Peter's truck.

Why did you choose your major?  I chose my major because I love the application of physics in mechanical systems.  Additionally, I love that my major is so broad and that I have many industries I can apply my degree to.

Describe your experience working with QL+ so far.  Last year, I worked on the Motorized Wagon for Mikaela Project.  The biggest challenge so far is trying to communicate my ideas to teammates.  It can be difficult to make sure that they know exactly what I mean when I describe them.  Seeing the result of a successful prototype and knowing that my hard work is making a difference in the individual’s life makes the work I do for QL+ highly rewarding.

It’s been a great time working with Peter Way.  I’ve learned that the main purpose of this project is to provide a solution that is entirely tailored to the challenger’s problem.  Regardless of how difficult a problem may be, there is always a solution.

What would you say to other students about QL+?  If you want to join a club or student association, where your hard work is used to help those in need, join QL+.

What are your plans after graduation?  My plan after graduation is to work at Edwards Air Force Base as a Test Engineer.

What has been the proudest moment of your college career?  The proudest moment of my college career is when I was part of a team that designed a drill-powered vehicle out of bamboo.  Our team had the best speed-to-weight ratio.

What three words best describe you?  Three words that best describe me are hardworking, caring, and optimistic.
