Duania is a fifth year, General Engineering student with a concentration in Materials Engineering, graduating from Cal Poly in June 2019.  Duania and her teammates are working on the Cooking Arm Challenge for a Marine Corp Veteran.  In 2010, our Challenger lost his right arm while serving in Afghanistan. Before his injury, he loved to cook and prepare food. Thus far, he hasn’t found a prosthetic that allows him to perform these tasks efficiently. He has challenged the students to build him a cooking arm that will allow him to stir, cut, chop, pry, and fry, in his attempt to remaster the kitchen.

Why did you choose your major?  I chose my major because I like being challenged in my field, I also like being able to make things with my hands and work in teams.

Describe your experience working with QL+ so far. What is the biggest challenge? What has been rewarding?  I’ve had an awesome experience with QL+ so far.  Our advisor at QL+ has been very helpful in getting us in contact with our challenger, as well as providing the team with very helpful advice. The biggest challenge so far has been working on our project requirements because, in order to know what we are going to build, we have to get to know our challenger and build a relationship with him.  I think this whole challenge is very rewarding because I really like helping people. This challenge is allowing me to do what I’ve always wanted and it is not just to design, it is to design something meaningful that will make a difference in someone else’s life.

What would you say to other students about QL+?  I would like to tell other students that if you like doing satisfying work and helping others, QL+ is the place for you. You’ll be challenged along the way, but you will also learn about yourself and grow as you go.

What are your plans after graduation?  After graduation, I want to join the Air Force and work in launch operations. I also want to teach middle school math and science.

What has been the proudest moment of your college career? The proudest moment of my college career has been making the decision to go back to school full time. I took some time off to work and save for my tuition. Last year I finally decided to return full-time and solely focus on my education. I think it is important for people to know that it's never too late to pursue your dreams.

What three words best describe you?  Kind, optimistic and goal oriented.
