Megan is a senior at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) graduating in May 2019. She is majoring in Chemical Engineering with a Chemistry Dual Degree. Megan and her teammates are working on the Waterproof Osseointegration Covers Challenge for an Army Veteran who lost both legs above the knee due to an improvised explosive device (IED). The Challenger had bilateral osseointegration surgery, a procedure where an implant is used to permanently anchor artificial limbs to the human skeleton. Although the veteran will be cleared for swimming in certain bodies of water, he would still like a waterproof cover to protect his legs and the implant during water activities.
Why did you choose your major? I wanted to challenge myself in college. Engineering is something I've always found inspiring and I wanted to prove to myself that I could succeed in a notoriously difficult degree program. Chemistry makes up the whole world, and I wanted to be able to make an impact and inspire others to do the same.
Describe your experience working with QL+ so far. What is the biggest challenge? What has been rewarding? Working with QL+ has been incredibly rewarding. I enjoy working on a project that I know will impact someone's life. The project is not conventionally chemical engineering, so the biggest challenge, as well as the most rewarding part, has been finding connections from my education to different areas of the project.
What would you say to other students about QL+? I would tell other students that QL+ is a growing organization that truly focuses on the betterment of both the lives of veterans and the education of students.
What are your plans after graduation? I plan on working for a couple of years as a chemical engineer and eventually go on to get a master's degree.
What has been the proudest moment of your college career? I am proud of the effort and dedication I have put into getting two degrees. I have pushed myself to limits I didn't know I had and I am so proud to be graduating.
What three words best describe you? Self-driven. Curious. Open-minded.
