Parker Duncan is in his fourth year at Cal Poly, SLO, graduating in June 2020.  He is majoring in Manufacturing Engineering.   Parker and his teammates are working on the Sand Foot Challenge.  Our Challenger, Sgt. Brady has a trans-tibial amputation and is very active in his community.  He would like a lower leg prosthesis that will allow him to walk more comfortably on sand.  Sgt. Brady finds himself walking on the beach frequently, as he works for the New Hampshire Parks Department.  His current prosthesis causes him back pain after extended use particularly when he walks on uneven ground.

Why did you choose your major?  I chose to pursue manufacturing engineering because I love designing and making products and really enjoy using/designing for the cool technology and machinery in the manufacturing industry.

Describe your experience working with QL+:  The biggest challenge so far has been learning the specific engineering and problem-solving required to design a good prosthetic.  The most rewarding aspect has been that we are working to improve Sgt. Brady‚Äôs everyday life which makes putting extra time into, and having a passion for, the project easy to do.

What would you say to other students about QL+?  Working with our Challenger has been a rewarding and fun experience.  We have learned a lot from our Challenger and he has really helped us with design ideas.
I would highly recommend trying out a project with QL+ because it is a fun, engaging, and rewarding program to work with.

What are your plans after graduation?   I plan to move to San Diego and work as a Manufacturing Engineer for General Atomics EMS.

What has been the proudest moment of your college career?  My proudest moment in college has been becoming involved with our student chapter of SME (Society of Manufacturing Engineers).  SME allows me to be involved in our campus culture and community.  This year I have the opportunity to be the club president and really enjoy leading the club and being involved with the manufacturing engineering department.
