Zack Reinecke is a Senior at Ohio University.  He is a Mechanical Engineering Major and getting his minors in Business and Math.  Zack is graduating in May, 2020.  Zack and his teammates are working on the Surf Transfer Challenger to help Army Veteran and lower-limb amputee, Rosemary Salak.  The team is tasked with the challenge of finding a way to help Rosemary enter and exit the water at the beach, independently.  Currently, Rosemary relies on friends or an object like a chair to help her get in and out of the surf.

Why did you choose your major?  I chose my major because it simply made sense. I loved doing math problems and science was fascinating, and everyone told me that engineering would be the way to apply those disciplines.  I took engineering classes throughout high school as well, so I knew that this is what I wanted to do.

Describe your experience working with QL+ so far.  What is the biggest challenge?  What has been rewarding?  The biggest challenge is not being able to meet face-to-face with our customer regularly.  I believe that that would give us a better idea of how to help her specifically, and we could more easily prototype/brainstorm ideas with her.  The most rewarding thing is knowing that I am working towards making someone else’s life better.

What is it like working with your Challenger? Rosemary makes herself very available to us, so it is a pleasure working and talking with her.

What would you say to other students about QL+?  I would say that this is an incredible opportunity to help out and get to know a new person.

What are your plans after graduation?  After graduation, I would like to work either in the Twin Cities or the Cleveland area.  I would like to work for an engineering company, and I would like to eventually do field engineering and travel.

What has been the proudest moment of your college career?   The proudest moment of my college career was landing an internship with Swagelok. I talked to them at the career fair, got an interview, and received an offer, and I could not have been prouder of myself.

What three words best describe you?  Three words that best describe me are passionate, comedic, and artistic.
