Student Spotlight SC: Aaron Waldman, Virginia Tech

Aaron Waldman is a Senior at Virginia Tech, scheduled to graduate in May 2021. He is majoring in Mechanical Engineering and minoring in Biomedical Engineering and Entrepreneurship. Aaron is a member of the QL+ Student Chapter at Virginia Tech. Aaron is working on a project for David Clark. David is the mayor of the town of Pulaski in Virginia. He has nerve problems on the side of his right knee, which inhibits the control of his lower quads, hamstrings, and part of his calf muscle. The goal of the project is to develop a leg stabilization system to allow him to safely and properly operate a bicycle.‚Äč...

Sean Ortiz is a Senior at San Diego State University and the Project Manager for the QL+ Student Chapter at SDSU. Sean is a Senior majoring in Mechanical Engineering with an emphasis in Biomedical Engineering. He is graduating in December 2019. Sean and other members of the Student Chapter are working on the Surfboard Transfer Device to ease the process of getting adaptive surfers in the water. Currently, it is very difficult to get adaptive surfers oriented in the water. This project should help simplify this process....

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: RYAN KISSINGER, CAL POLY

As a member of the QL+ SA, he is working on Project MIDAS [manual-interface dexterity-affording solution], or Hands For Julian. Julian Reynoso is a ten-year-old boy who was involved in a hit-and-run accident with a drunk driver. As a result of this tragic accident, he lost his father, sister, and brother. 85% of his body was burned, and he lost nine of his fingers. Project MIDAS endeavors to design a set of prosthetic hands for him to interface with the world: the left hand being a mechatronic hand, and the right hand being purely mechanical, due to the amputation locations on each....

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: GARRET LAWLOR, VIRGINIA TECH

Garrett Lawlor is a sophomore at Virginia Tech. He is majoring in Materials Science Engineering and minoring in Biomedical Engineering. He is a member of the newly formed QL+ Club on campus. Garrett and his teammates are designing and building an accessible-to-all miniature golf course. The design of the course must take into consideration necessary safety precautions and must include safety railings and minimizing the complicity of the course without taking away from the amusement of it. The team wants the course to be mobile which will be accomplished by building pieces of the course that will be fastened together to make the entire product....
