Featured Project: Weightlifting Hook

George Mason University +
Navy Veteran
Kyle Silveira

  • After losing parts of his fingers during a high risk night-time search and rescue training mission, Kyle’s hand became entangled in a steel hoist cable, causing his hand to get stuck. After a partial amputation, he avoided strength training because he did not have the grip strength for many weight bearing exercises, especially rowing, deadlifts, pull-ups, and others.

  • The George Mason University engineering team built a lightweight carbon fiber hook that attaches to his wrist, enabling him to lift weights without imbalance.

  • Kyle returned to strength training, regaining his passion for exercise.
